L-Theanine vs Magnesium: Which Is Better for Sleep?

By Frederique Lemoine

If you're trying to create a calmer evening routine, you've probably come across both magnesium and L-theanine. They're often mentioned together — but they're not the same thing and they don't play the same role in the body.

So, is L-theanine or magnesium better for sleep? There isn't one universal winner. Magnesium is an essential mineral that supports normal nervous system and psychological function, while L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea that has been studied for relaxation and sleep quality.

Here's how they compare.

What does magnesium do?

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body. Among its recognised nutritional roles, magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function, normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

That's one reason magnesium has become such a popular ingredient in evening routines.

There are several different forms of magnesium. EESE uses magnesium bisglycinate, where magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine.

What does L-theanine do?

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. Unlike magnesium, it isn't an essential mineral or vitamin.

Researchers have studied L-theanine for its potential relationship with relaxation, stress and sleep quality. One reason it has become popular in evening formulations is that it is generally associated with relaxation without acting like a traditional sedative.

For people who describe themselves as physically tired but mentally still "on", that makes L-theanine an interesting ingredient to learn about.

Is L-theanine better than magnesium for sleep?

Not necessarily. Asking whether magnesium or L-theanine is "better" is a little like asking whether dinner or dimming the lights is better for your evening. They serve different purposes.

Magnesium is a nutrient your body requires and contributes to normal nervous system and psychological function.

L-theanine is an amino acid that has been researched in relation to relaxation, stress and sleep quality.

They therefore don't necessarily have to compete. They can be complementary parts of an evening formulation.

Can you take magnesium and L-theanine together?

Magnesium and L-theanine are frequently found together in evening supplements because they are different compounds with different functions.

EESE Dream Ritual contains both magnesium bisglycinate and L-theanine, alongside glycine, reishi, chamomile and other ingredients.

If you take medication, have a medical condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak with a healthcare professional before adding supplements to your routine.

What about melatonin?

Melatonin is different again. It's a hormone naturally produced by your body and is involved in regulating your sleep-wake cycle.

That means comparing magnesium, L-theanine and melatonin as though they're three versions of the same ingredient can be misleading.

We've broken down the differences in our guide to magnesium vs melatonin vs L-theanine.

So which one belongs in your evening ritual?

Instead of looking for a single ingredient that will magically switch you off, it can be more helpful to think about your evening as a whole.

When do you stop working? How much caffeine have you had? Are you still looking at a bright screen at 11 p.m.? Do you give yourself any transition between the day and sleep?

An evening ritual creates that transition.

For EESE, that means something very simple: make a warm drink, slow down and give your body a consistent signal that the day is ending.

From doing to resting. EESE Dream Ritual is a warm cocoa-based evening drink containing magnesium bisglycinate, L-theanine, glycine, reishi and chamomile — without melatonin. Discover Dream Ritual →
